Michelle Williams
Unexpected

Review By Joe Walker

Michelle Williams’ first two solo albums, while having R&B and pop tones, were albums of praise that featured with traditional gospel values. This, her third, is secular, sexier, and, sadly, somewhat forgettable. What separated Williams from her Destiny's Child group mates was an ability to stay centered, Her voice never extended past her range, and her arrangements catered to her own unique style. Williams’ presence made Destiny's Child sound mature.

Williams has lost sight of that here. Songs like the single "We Break The Dawn" are fun, no doubt as everyone enjoys a good dance tune now-and-then, but it makes Williams sound no different than her younger pop and R&B peers. The entire album isn’t without merit, though. On the Rico Love-produced “Too Young For Love,” she offers a clear message and does much the same with "Hello Heartbreak." This album’s a disappointment, but perhaps Williams is just holding back until the next Destiny’s Child album.
